All about hotsync on Sony Clie (S/N series)

The USB sync cable has given a lot of trouble to many users because of the need for Sony's USB driver and there are different drivers for OS3.5 (710C) and OS4.0 (320).

If you have problem using USB sync cable for hardware or software reasons, using serial cable may well be the best solution because it is very easy to use and compatible with Win95 upwards.

This faq is separated in 2 sections: Serial and USB
Note: We have tested only on 320 (OS4.0) and 710C (OS3.5.2), which should represent all models as far as hardware is concerned, other models may or may not behave differently.

(Palm Desktop 4.01 recommended, if you do not already have it, download from www.palm.com)

Can I use Palm Desktop without installing Sony Desktop?
Yes - just download the latest Palm Desktop and install. 

I already have Palm Desktop installed, can I use it without uninstall and re-install?
Yes 

I have Palm Desktop installed and sync to a Palm, can I sync to Clie as well?
Yes - just give a different user name when you first sync a new Palm device. Infact you can sync to multiple Palm devices with Palm Desktop. As far as Palm Desktop is concerned, Sony Clie is not different from any other Palm. 

Can I sync to 2 different Clie (eg: 320 and 710) ?
Yes - same answer as above 

If you are using USB cable
(successful USB setup can also use Serial cable) 

I have Palm Desktop already installed, can I use it without installing Sony Desktop?
No, you MUST uninstall Palm Desktop and then install Sony Desktop. 

Can I use Palm Desktop 4.01?
Yes, install Palm Desktop OVER Sony Desktop. After this, you will have Palm Desktop for Clie and Palm Desktop icons on your desktop. You can delete either of these icons as they point to the same application - Palm Desktop 4.01. 

Can I sync Clie AND Palm in the same computer?
Yes, see above answer, just give it a new user name when you sync a new Palm device. 

Can I Sync 2 different Clie in the same computer?
Yes, but it may be rather complicated. See here. 

Can I sync Palm and PPC  in the same computer (Palm Desktop + Activesync) ?
Yes, make sure only one is running (in system tray)
