There is no setup necessary on the camera. When the cable and GPS are connected, with camera on and metering activated, a GPS symbol appears on top LCD display. If no position lock is acquired on the GPS, the GPS symbol . When lock is acquired, the GPS symbol stays on. When you take a picture with the GPS symbol on, your GPS position data is recorded in the picture exif data field. When you play back the picture in the camera, you can see the GPS data (you must have selected data field in the playback display mode - p.141 in D200 manual)
If no GPS symbol is displayed on the LCD, check your GPS if the settings
are correct. Do not forget that you must active the camera metering for
the cable to work. Because the cable requires power (power consumption
by the cable is very minimal so there is very little drain on the camera
battery.) from the camera. Power is supplied only when metering is activated
(half press shutter). When Camera is receiving GPS signal, whether lock
is acquired or not (GPS symbol
or not), camera metering is continuously active so cable is receiving power
all the time. If there are time gaps between taking pictures, you can turn
the camera off to preserve power. If you do not want to turn the camera
off, you can disconnect the cable off GND2 (keep
GND2 connected with camera). This way
the camera will go to sleep mode after a short time. When you re-connect
the cable, remember to half press shutter to provide power to the cable.
But turning the camera off is recommended.
If the GPS symbol ,
it means no position lock has been acquired. No GPS position will be recorded
if you take pictures when GPS symbol .
DO NOT turn off the GPS if you are going to take a picture anytime. Because it takes time (seconds or minutes depending on the GPS) to re-acquired position lock when a GPS is turned off and then on again. Do not confuse this with powering the cable. The cable works instantly once power is supplied. So by keeping the GPS on and cable connected all the time you can take picture with GPS position as soon as you turn camera on (your GPS may lose lock from time to time particularly if your GPS is not in view of open sky).
Tip - as a general good practice, ALWAYS connect/disconnect interface cable GND2 with CAMERA OFF.
